Counting Song Cards

Counting Song Cards lesson plan

  • 1.

Young children learn songs, poems, and fingerplays by singing, repeating them, and seeing pictures to remind them of the words. When they feel confident about the rhyme, they’re far more likely to participate.

  • 2.

Choose a counting song or rhyme, such as 1-2 Buckle My Shoe, Five Little Monkeys, The Elephants, or A.A. Milne’s poem ;The End. Songs such as The Elephants help children learn to add one by one.

  • 3.

Careful listening is required for children to know when to raise their card. Cue them at first so they are sure to be successful.

  • 4.

Choose a number in a counting song or poem.

  • 5.

On an index card, write the numeral with a Crayola® Marker. Make it big, so it fills the card.

  • 6.

Search through recycled magazines for pictures to help you remember the words that go with the number. For example, for Five Little Ducks, find pictures of five ducks.

  • 7.

Cut out the magazine pictures with Crayola® Scissors. Glue them on the other side of the index card with a Crayola® Glue Stick.

  • 8.

With your friends, sing the song. When the group sings your number, hold your card high so everyone can see the picture.
