How Many Crayons? lesson plan

  • 1.

    Children who are just learning to understand addition and subtraction will enjoy this game. Start with three crayons and gradually increase the number. Lay out the crayons so children can count them.

  • 2.

    Play with just one or two children at a time. Listen as they think out loud. Observe their math skills so you can plan other hands-on experiences to stretch their abilities. Older children can play with younger ones.

  • 3.

    Show children how to write addition and subtraction problems with numerals and symbols.

  • 4.

    Pick your favorite Crayola® Crayon colors.

  • 5.

    With an adult or older child as a leader, count how many crayons you have.

  • 6.

    Give the leader some of your crayons to put under the bowl. How many crayons do you have left? How many are under the bowl? Check to see.

  • 7.

    Write the number combinations you discover, such as 3 – 2 = 1, each time you play.<p.

  • 8.

    Play as many times as you like. Use more crayons for bigger challenges.
