About Gem Stones

Use Crayola® crayons, colored pencils, or markers to decorate the gemstones. Learn about the gemstones as you color them. Aquamarine: This stone can be any shade of blue from pale blue to blue-green. It can be found in Brazil, India, southwest Africa, Australia, and Russia. Amber: This is hardened sap from prehistoric pine trees. If you look closely at a piece of amber you might find some insects from that time period. They became stuck in the sap. Amber is a yellow-brown or gold color. It often washes up on beaches in Canada, Romania, Siberia, Burma, and East Prussia. Ruby: This stone is red, and the Greeks once believed it had special powers. They believed it would protect a house from storms. This gem can be found in Thailand, Burma, Tanzania, and Sri Lanka. Quartz: It can be a variety of different colors from pink, green, purple, yellow, or clear. Quartz is one of the most common minerals on earth. This stone can be found in Germany, England, Brazil, and the U.S. state of Arkansas Pearl: It is a white gem that is created inside of a mollusk, or oyster. A piece of sand is caught inside the mollusk, which builds a silky coat around the sand. This forms the pearl. Pearls can be found in oceans near India, Australia, and Central America. Turquoise: This stone is blue with black colored "veins" called matrix. These veins are mixes of brown or gray rock. It is found in Iran, Russia, Egypt, England, and the southwestern United States.
